This was a very fun series to read. I've now read several books from this author and I've enjoyed them all. Her characters are very relatable to me (yes I can be a bit crazy and rough around the edges haha!) so perhaps that's why I just really enjoy them but I feel she does a great job at creating fun, realistic, flawed, awkward, likeable characters. This series was no different. It was fun getting to know Joss and Ryan and watching them both grow and develop throughout the story. I love that the ending (much like the prequel series) wrapped up enough ends to feel complete but also left enough open to feel real. They don't live in a perfect world, not even close so there is no "happily ever after" just like there isn't in real life. There is only "happily enough for now" and that's how they end. I love the tie-in with the previous series. I just thought everything was fun from beginning to end. There are a lot of editing errors but they were only occasionally distracting. I can overlook them as long as I don't have to stop and try to figure out what she's trying to say and I only had to do that maybe a few times. The world Ms. Ward created was great! The gangs, the zombies, the colonies...I felt like I could really see it the way she had it in her own head. I would read any spin-off series from this should she choose to write any more (hint, hint!) ;)

Backs Against the Wall Survival Volume 2 Tracey Ward 9781496025555 Books Reviews

A Tracey Ward fan, I greatly looked forward to BATW...Book 2 in a what is planned as (so far) a 3 book novel tracing the adventures of Joss, Ryan and Trent in post-zombapoc Seattle, WA.

I'm not going to venture into Spoilerland except to say that J & R's relationship continues to flower under or in spite of the the terrible world in which they occupy. Their relationship is set out in a very realistic way to make the story work (Ward always does this well and it's a signature aspect of her zombpoc books beginning with the Quarantine series). Initially I questioned how young adults might deny their hormones and sail around one another locked inside wistful Friend Zones, but that's just the way it rolls with Ward. It's not particularly "real" but...oh yes, Susannah, it works as a story-telling artifice.

Stars Awarded For
1. J & R's relationship and the way it is told. At heart this is a romance, not a zombpoc survival adventure...although it is darn fine adventure yarn too.
2. The adventure yarn itself. Creative and absorbing. The Hive scenario is superbly crafted.
3. Draws you in and keeps you there. One of those very few zombpoc novels that keep you gagging for more because you care about the characters and wonder what fresh revelations lurk around the corner. Cliche time page turner, hard to put down.
4. Great dialog and Joss Reflections - you really get inside her mind. A keynote plus which lifts this well above par.

Star Taken Off For
1. Plot holes. Big ones. Like Indiana Jones movie scripts they're right there but you can skip over them reasonably easily. Most readers won't go into "forensic mode", so no major grief or drama on this score.
2. Editing needed more work. I'm not a typo-huntin' freak but it was fun discover these howlers and clangers like a currents in a burger bun.
3. Abrupt Cliffhanger Ending. It's darn good one though and I understand full well why Tracey Ward is rolling this series out in Volumes. Make no mistake you get a full clump of pages for your money (unlike some other authors using this publish-on-the-fly model)...so don't angst about it. More for noting than anything else.
4. My more mature policy is to award 5 Stars for truly stellar, top-shelf books which are near-perfect. (Fight grade inflation!) Hence a 4 Star denotes an Excellent Read with a some minor flaws. Tracking?
Joss, joined by new friends Ryan and Trent confront the stuff of nightmares, but stuggle mightily to live another day! The trio wander from one dark choice to the next, running afoul of every single evil in a world gone to hell!
Backs Against the Wall, indeed! I'm reading with my hand over my eyes (but peeking) because I'm afraid to read what happens next!
An awesome connecting link in the trilogy! It's a runaway train of peril, hopelessness and certain death! No place to hide. No place to go! Cheers!
This is a well written and thought out book (series) with funny dialogue and plenty of action that kept me on edge. I had to put it down a couple of times to breathe. Its a continuation of a series I would absolutely recommend reading the whole of. Based in a zombie apocalypse that first occurred ten years ago, Tracey Ward is really good here at giving back story without giving all of the back story, perfect use of giving the end result without coddling the reader and allowing us to fill in the blanks (much as in real life situations where you ask yourself "What the hell happened HERE???), but giving just enough to go on. Her characters are flawed and damaged and she allows them to grow. Her writing is consistent. You should read this. You should read All of her books.
