I picked up this book expecting light reading but it develops into something much deeper. Fascinating story of the ancient and much more modern Aleuts beside the evolution of a thoroughly unlikeable woman into one owning her own soul at great price. There are many kinds of Taboos and they all exact a steep cost. But breaking them also awakens power. Quite a psychological study.

Story line was pretty good. I have met people like cindy, so that was realistic. Not too sure about the mystical part and history, that would require follow up on my part. Nice neat happy ending but too quick and too neat.
I very rarely give a book 5 stars. This one was a slow start, but as I read more, I got more and more intrigued and captivated by the story.
I was intrigued with the historical story and the mysteries. Would recommend it for young adults and even teens except for the drugs and sex that are a part of her story. Probably though they have seen and heard worse in films and TV
I love novels that take a reader back and forth through time and between characters. I also love novels set in the Far North. And She Was satisfied both of my cravings nicely. It also made me want to start watching that show about dangerous fishing in the Bering Sea.
This book was fascinating on so many levels. The setting of the Aleutian Islands is very unique and the place is like a character in and of itself. Very atmospheric. The story of the Aleutian women was also fascinating. One part history of a place, and one part anthropoligical study of a people. The way the author interweaves this with Brandy's story is just brilliant. I was hooked from page one and couldn't wait to finish the story to see how everything turned out, but then when it was over I didn't want it to end. This is definitely a book I will never forget. One of those books that gets under your skin and you just want it to stay there.
I'm impressed when an author can write a literary novel that delves into the complex lives of ordinary people living on the margins of society. I worked in the Aleutians for 7 summers and remain floored by Ms. Dyson's skill at bringing her characters to life and making the reader really care about their outcomes. Well done!
A person can drift from one place to another, doing what she does with little thought or intention. She touches the lives of others for the moment. Take this person to the Aleutian Islands where life is hard. Let her float on society, never really casting deeply for anyone. Let this society be native Aleuts, fisherman, an innocent sort of life.
As a counterpoint tell the story of the Aleuts over the centuries, how they survived.
The tale is fascinating. The story enlightening. I'm glad I read it.
